Overview

Banoo Persian Restaurant & Takeaway, nestled in the heart of Lower Hutt’s Centre City Plaza, offers an authentic taste of Persian cuisine that is both rich in tradition and robust in flavor. Specializing in halal dishes, this cozy venue caters to lovers of Middle Eastern fare, whether seeking a hearty dine-in experience or a convenient takeaway option.

The restaurant’s standout is undoubtedly its kebab selection. From juicy Gilani chicken and tender lamb koobideh to fresh grilled fish kebabs, each dish is crafted with meticulous attention to seasoning and cooking technique. The much-praised Barg Kebab shines as a highlight, showcasing perfectly balanced flavors. Patrons have particularly lauded the charcoal-seared chicken, praised as one of the best in the area for its succulent texture and nuanced smokiness.

Banoo offers a variety of main dishes beyond kebabs, including saffron-infused preparations and flavorful mandi options featuring chicken, lamb, or fish. This variety caters well to diverse palates, including those favoring pescatarian choices. The inclusion of vibrant sides, such as Shirazi salad with its distinct tangy dressing, and traditional Persian accompaniments like saffron rice and yoghurt, complement the mains beautifully. The meal often concludes on a warm note with Persian tea and surprising treats like rose water lemonade — a refreshing and aromatic non-alcoholic beverage that sets Banoo apart.

The atmosphere at Banoo is intimate and welcoming, evoking the feeling of sharing a meal in a friend’s home. The owner’s genuine hospitality infuses the space with warmth, enhancing the overall dining experience. The name “Banoo,” meaning “princess” or “queen” in Persian, reflects the heartfelt dedication behind the brand and adds a personal touch to the visit.

While discreetly located in a quieter plaza area behind High Street, Banoo remains accessible and inviting, making it an ideal stop for families, groups, and anyone eager to explore Persian culinary heritage. Whether embarking on a casual lunch or a special occasion feast, the restaurant’s blend of aromatic spices, tender meats, and thoughtful service ensures an impression that lingers long after the last bite.

In summary, Banoo Persian Restaurant & Takeaway delivers an exceptional Persian dining experience marked by authentic flavors, a diverse menu, and an atmosphere rich in hospitality. It stands as a must-visit destination for halal cuisine enthusiasts and those seeking an honest, flavorful journey into Persian food culture in Lower Hutt.

Maybe the best chicken I’ve had in my life anywhere, any preparation. Perfectly juicy, perfectly seasoned with a bit of charcoal sear. The lamb mince kebab, rice, and sauces were all really good too, but that chicken……. The soup served with the main was also very good! Plus friendly service and food came out much quicker than expected. Will be back for sure!

BANOO PERSIAN RESTAURANT Such good authentic food! The owner was so hospitable and generous, you could really tell his whole heart was there in the way his hospitality felt like you were at an old friends house for dinner We got a mix of different kebabs and meat including chicken & lamb and tuna steak & salmon for our pescatarian friend. The favourites among the table was the chicken, lamb kebabs and the dressing on the salad(SO yum). He said the ‘the four seasons chicken’ was a popular choice and featured the flavours from all 4 different chicken dishes so you can experience a mini version of each one- brilliant. We were served complimentary traditional Persian tea at the end of our meal which was an unexpected but a happily welcomed(and delicious!!) after dinner treat. Mentionable highlight was the homemade rose water lemonade- it was so unusual like nothing I’ve tasted before and was SO yum!! Non alcoholic btw. A really cute mention- he named the restaurant after the Persian word ‘Banu’ which translates to "grand lady", "princess" or "queen" which is WHAT HE CALLS HIS WIFE so he named it after her he was seriously the cutest and one of those people who you met that you walk away from wishing them nothing but joy. It’s located just behind the dance shop on high St in the plaza building. A worthwhile visit if you’re in Lower Hutt! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Food was excellent. Waiter in training ... and one could tell he has no experience. FOH constantly checked and fixed mistakes though. Lovely atmosphere with friendly happy people. We had lamb soup which was served cold... interesting but delicious taste. Saffron chicken kebab, koobideh, saffron rice, salad, pickles, yoghurt, and tea that was served with a date on the side. Every single dish had subtle flavour combinations that accompanied each other perfectly. Only downside would be that food was not hot but warm. Still delicious and still a 5 out of 5.

Came in a group of 14 pax for lunch, we got a special banquet that included shah kebab platter, lamb shanks, banoo rice, a selection of bread, Shirazi salad, saffron chicken wings—and for dessert, tea & baklava. The restaurant was located in a pretty deserted mall, but signage was clear and we could find the restaurant easily enough. Alex the chef was so inviting and generous, he threw in an additional delicious soup at the beginning to start, and extra red bean bread at the end together with dessert, we were all stuffed by the end of the lunch. I really enjoyed all the variety of meats in the kebab platter, they were all so flavourful with nice spices, and the lamb shank meat was so soft and tender, it practically fell off the bone. I also enjoyed the baklava, nice, crunchy, and sweet! Definitely recommend and would come again!

5/5 – Absolutely Incredible Experience! This was our first time trying Iranian cuisine, and we were absolutely blown away! Every dish was rich, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The kebabs were tender, the rice fragrant, and the stews packed with depth. Even the desserts were delicious—light, sweet, and perfectly balanced. What made the evening even more special was the warm hospitality. Alex, the chef, was the friendliest we’ve ever encountered. You can really feel the love he puts into his food and the pride he takes in his culture. We left with full bellies and huge smiles. Highly recommend to anyone curious about trying something new—you won’t regret it. We’ll definitely be back!

Absolutely stunning food. We dropped by after 8pm for dinner and had the saffron chicken wings and the Mandi rice. The food was incredible, plenty of juicy meats, fluffy saffron rice, creamy hummus and yoghurt sauce along with fresh salads. We were also served a flavourful lamb soup with lentils before we started our food and it was all kinds of amazing. Even though it’s inside a rundown mall, the place has a cool vibe to it with its simplicity and retro jazz music.
